This is a book about the social in Highland entanglements with Empire the networks, relationships and identities that made it possible for Highland Scots to access the Empire and its benefits. It explores from a range of perspectives the impact that these Scots had, as sojourners and settlers, on the different places they encountered. It is also a book about the present-day legacies of their engagements with Empire, and of the ongoing process of forging social and cultural identities with Highland roots. The volume presents rigorous and insightful new research from both well-established and early career scholars, accompanied by commentary on the research and the issues it raises from a range of academic and non-academic voices. The book represents a significant contribution our understanding of the role of Highland Scots, influenced significantly by their culture and language, in creating the Empire and its legacies. It advances knowledge of just how diverse the impacts of Highland Scots were on forging landscapes and lifescapes across the Atlantic, and how their exposure to the colonial world influenced and reshaped their Diasporic identities. While the British Empire was a collaboration of diverse interests, this book will shed light on one important interest: the Highland one.

"This survey offers a broad-ranging synthesis of the history and archaeology of Govan, Glasgow, and aims to inform conservation guidance for future development. The burgh's origins in early Christian times are demonstrated by the remarkable and enigmatic series of carved stones contained in Govan Old Parish Church. This church remained a haven of tranquility during Govan's remarkable transformation, in less than a century, from a small riverside settlement to the centre of world shipbuilding. Govan was, before being absorbed by Glasgow in 1912, the fifth largest burgh in Scotland. Synonymous with shipbuilding and advances in marine engineering that carry on to this day, the town bears evidence of its associated industries and the distinctive social institutions fostered by shipbuilding, like Elder Park and the Pearce Institute. The town has benefited from recent archaeological investigation around Govan Old Parish Church, which has increased understanding of the early Christian roots of the burgh. The authors consider where other areas of archaeological potential lie, to inform future management of Govan's historic environment, and pose questions about the evolution of Scotland's burghs in general. This book forms part of the Scottish Burgh Survey - a series designed to identify the archaeological potential of Scotland's historic towns.".
