Nessun dietrologo si è ricordato di questa notevole opera editoriale che si ricollega al risanamento di Napoli. Tutti presi, giornalisti, politici ed urbanisti, a discutere sul futuro di Napoli. Ecco perché ne scrivo io, di Raffaele D'Ambra, nel centenario della sua morte (1892), come socio dell'Accademia Pontaniana e per aderire all'invito dell'amico Franco Di Mauro. Non si tratta della > o di un > di Napoli antica ma di una ristampa in memoria di Raffaele D'Ambra nel centenario della sua morte. Un libro capace di suscitare nei napoletani tante evocazioni mano a mano che, sfogliando le pagine, l'occhio si posa su monumenti, ambienti e itinerari perduti. Dalla introduzione di Atanasio Mozzillo: ."Ed ora in alto il piccone! Abbattete! Cadano sotto le ruine i germi malefìci delle infermità e le nuove correnti d'aria e di luce che si agiteranno su di esse, siano apportatrici di prosperità e di salute". Così, alla presenza dei sovrani, il 15 giugno del 1889, Nicola Amore dà inizio ai lavori del risanamento; o meglio "sventramento", come auspicato da Agostino Depretis nei giorni del colera. Ma c'è qualcuno che i colpi di piccone li sta a contare sgomento, qualcuno che in quei vicoli tanto deprecati dai "risanatori" si aggira incredulo per la rovina che se ne sta facendo e per i progetti che la vogliono ancora più estesa, fino a cancellare la memoria stessa di una città sigillata nella sua miseria, ma anche nel suo passato. Ed è, inutile dirlo, il nostro Raffaele d'Ambra, che con le sue dispense e le sue tavole, tenta il solo recupero ormai possibile di una Napoli che sta per scomparire insieme al secolo. Anche lui è là, in quel giorno di festa, confuso tra la folla ad ascoltare il discorso di Nicola Amore; ma l'enfasi dello sventratore, la gonfia retorica dei giornalisti che esaltano l'avvenimento, lo muovono prima a fastidio, poi a rabbia.
