Le geste accompagne la voix. Il souligne pour l oeil ce que la voix énonce pour l oreille. Celui du comédien n est presque jamais évoqué par les sources, au contraire de celui du prédicateur, très précisément décrit dans les traités d art oratoire. La rhétorique ne consiste pas seulement à écrire des discours encore faut-il les incarner et devant un public. L éloquence n est pas un exercice littéraire c est aussi un exercice du corps. Cicéron parle même, à ce propos, d une éloquence du corps. Travailler sa gestuelle, ses mouvements ou encore la manière de placer son regard: autant d éléments qui contribuent, au moment de la déclamation à transmettre une émotion, à appuyer une idée et, surtout, à montrer que le discours que vous tenez est vôtre. Sans cette présence du corps, l exercice de la parole se réduirait à une déclamation froide et impersonnelle. Tout orateur devrait faire sienne la devise Mens sana in corpore sano, ou « Un esprit sain dans un corps sain » : Une bonne formation en art oratoire se doit d être à la fois intellectuelle (un esprit sain.) et physique (.dans un corps sain). L art de la parole est en effet un art complet : du moindre mouvement du corps et du visage jusqu aux ressources infinies du langage, toutes les capacités de l orateur sont sollicitées. Pourtant, dans la rhétorique classique notamment, « l esprit » est clairement privilégié par rapport au « corps », quand ce dernier n est pas tout simplement dénigré. Certes, l intelligence et la culture sont toujours les meilleures bases pour produire de bons discours, et le respect des règles de la logique dans l argumentation demeure la marque première d un exposé de qualité. Mais maîtriser son sujet ou avoir de bonnes idées ne suffit pas à captiver un auditoire. Encore faut-il trouver le bon geste pour appuyer son propos, savoir jouer de son regard, sourire ou grimacer, s adapter aux réactions du public, occuper l espace, manier des objets, s exprimer avec force et clarté sans s essouffler, tenir dans la durée.
