Original 1/2 calf with marbled boards, rubbed, boards detached. The inside front cover has a partially manuscript slip of a New York bookseller and bookbinder, Valentine Nutter. This is the manuscript letter record book for Daniel Crommelin & Sons, an important import-export and banker in New York City in the 18th and 19th centuries. The firm had been founded in 1767. In the 1790's this firm produced loans for the United States government, though those loans are not mentioned in this book of lettesr. This book contains 95 letters on 68 leaves from the firm primarily to a Dutch broker in Amsterdam, Van Horne & Clarkson. The letters detail the purchase, sale and transportation of goods, problems with ships and markets. Among the letters is a fascinating proposal in 1801, accompanied by an outline contract "respecting a expedition to China" for the importation of tea. Explaining that though the Dutch East India Company Company enjoyed the exclusive privilege for this trade, Holland's precarious political position with respect to England had forced that company to employ neutral ships, primarily Danish and Swedish, but that the climate of war in Europe had so far reduced the anticipation of their success that a shortfall in cargoes was expected for 1802, such that American contracts could be considered for 1803. This set of letters provides valuable insight into the impact of European political chaos on world trade and how that chaos was being turned into speculative advantage by American entrepreneurs.
