Dopo alcuni importanti studi di qualche decennio fa, questa monografia è la prima in Italia dedicata all'opera di Thomas Middleton. L'attenzione è rivolta soprattutto alle "Nuove Tragedie" attribuitegli negli ultimi decenni: dalla "Revenger's Tragedy" a "The Bloody Banquet", dalla "Yorkshire" alla "Lady's Tragedy", ovvero alcuni grandi drammi del periodo (ascritti nei secoli a Shakespeare o ad altri drammaturghi) che sono ora solidamente inseriti nel suo canone. Per presentare l'autore al pubblico italiano, il volume, pur concentrandosi sulle "Nuove Tragedie", prende in analisi tutta la sua opera, dalle "city comedies" (per cui è stato noto nei secoli) fino alle tragedie riconosciutegli da sempre, "Women Beware Women" e "The Changeling", e al "succès de scandale" "A Game at Chess", la satira politica che ha chiuso la sua carriera di drammaturgo nel 1624, tre anni prima della morte.
