Prima edizione
Hardcover. Condizione: Fine. Dust Jacket Included. 1st Edition. 510 pp. First U.S. edition. Scholarly work on economics in Latin America with the text in English and translated from the Portuguese by Linton Lomas Barrett and Marie McDavid Barrett. Binding tight; boards clean; dust jacket lightly scuffed with tiny closed tears; otherwise a fine copy of an oversize and heavy book that may require an additional shipping charge. Quoting the publisher's note: Darcy Ribeiro is a Brazilian anthropologist noted for his studies of primitive Indian life. . . Publication of Las Americas e a Civilização, scheduled for December 15, 1968, was ordered suspended and all copies of the book were destroyed. Since then, Ribeiro has lived in exile. He is currently a professor at the Institute of International Studies in Santiago, Chile. Professor Ribeiro divides the countries into three groups, determined by the makeup of their populations: the Witness Peoples, descendants of native Indians interbred with Europeans (e.g. México); the Transplanted Peoples, all European immigrants (e.g. Argentina); and the New Peoples, descendants of native Indians interbred with Negroes and Iberians (e.g. Brazil). In Ribeiro's view, European colonization of the Americas totally destroyed the native cultures. The new cultures that arose were a response to traits of the colonizers. . . .
