Hardcover. Condizione: new. Hardcover. Most organizations believe they have governance. Few understand how governance performs under pressure. As organizations grow, decisions become more complex, accountability becomes fragmented, and risk often develops outside traditional control structures. What appears stable at the surface can conceal significant exposure beneath. In The Descent Protocol, global trade governance advisor Darlene Waters-Colon introduces a new way of thinking about governance through the lens of depth. Drawing on more than three decades of experience leading governance and compliance programs for multinational organizations, she explores how complexity, organizational design, decision-making, and accountability interact as businesses scale.Using powerful diving metaphors and real-world governance insights, Waters-Colon demonstrates why governance failures rarely begin with a single decision. Instead, they emerge gradually through drift, misalignment, structural compression, and a lack of visibility across functions.Readers will discover: - Why visibility alone does not create control - How governance drift develops over time - The hidden effects of organizational compression - Why accountability often breaks down at scale - How to identify governance exposure before failure occurs - How to apply the Governance Depth Index(TM) to assess organizational alignmentBlending practical experience with a compelling framework, The Descent Protocol provides executives, compliance leaders, board members, risk professionals, and governance practitioners with a new perspective on organizational resilience.Because depth does not create exposure. Depth reveals it. A powerful framework for understanding how governance performs under pressure, revealing how organizational exposure accumulates beneath the surface and how leaders can build resilience at depth. Paperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. Was Lydia's Big Question answered? In this historical fiction story, young Lydia Hamilton Smith wondered who her father was. Born during the early 1800s in a Gettysburg tavern to a single mother, formerly enslaved, Lydia had to work as a servant just like her mother. The story starts on her fifth birthday. Both she and her mother worked for Mrs. Hamilton, a descendant of the tavern's founders and the owner of the Russell Tavern. She was demanding, yet her husband was not. When Lydia's mother moved out of the tavern, they adopted baby Jane, whose mother died after escaping toward freedom. Lydia learned about freedom seekers, property management, and bookkeeping. Without access to formal education, she adjusted, absorbed, and accommodated. Teenage Lydia found faith and made new friends, going with them to listen to a banjo player named Jacob Smith. The two married and had two sons, then moved to Harrisburg, where Jacob led a band, and they purchased property. Yet, Smith's drinking and gambling forced Lydia to get a job to pay the rent, and they separated. Soon after, Lydia accepted an offer from Thaddeus Stevens to be his housekeeper after he had moved to Lancaster. Lydia then ran Mr. Stevens' household, raising his two nephews along with her two boys. She had to learn new skills. In addition to managing his household, she oversaw his schedule to ensure the household ran smoothly. As a free woman at a time when blacks lacked basic rights - even those who were three-fourths white and worked for prominent people -she managed to overcome and thrive. Lydia struggles, beginning on her fifth birthday, through her teenage years, her marriage, and separation from Jacob Smith, and ends when she has learned new skills as a housekeeper and business manager for Thaddeus Stevens.
