Aggiungi al carrelloHardcover. Condizione: Very Good. No Jacket. Special Edition. 5 hardcover volumes of James Fenmore Cooper novels from (estimated 1890) Illustrated Cabinet Editions Set. 5 hardcover volumes of novels by J. Fenmore Cooper (JFC) produced (estimated 1890) as part of an undated set. All are illustrated mostly by F. O. C. Darley, JFC'…s original illustrator of choice, with glassine protection of illustrations still bound in the books. The five novels are: The Spy (1821), 3 plates plus 455pp. JFC's 2nd novel and his first world-wide best-selling novel. Set in American Revolutionary War, addresses differences between European military versus colonial guerrilla warfare. The Pilot (1824), 3 plates plus 473pp. Naval fiction recounting the life of a naval pilot during the American Revolutionary War. The Prairie (1827), 3 plates plus 485pp. Exploration of the land acquired through the Louisiana Purchase. The Pathfinder (1840), 3 plates plus 532pp. 3rd in the Leather-stocking series. Tells of the old age and death of the colonial hero woodsman. Miles Wallingford (1844), 3 plates plus 476pp. Sequel to Afloat and Ashore. An idealized autobiography of JFC's life. James Fenimore Cooper (1789-1851) was an American writer of the early 19th century, whose historical romances depicting colonial and indigenous characters from the 17th to the 19th centuries brought him fame and fortune. He lived much of his boyhood and his last 15 years in Cooperstown, New York, which was founded by his father William Cooper. Felix Octavius Carr Darley (1822-1888), usually credited as F. O. C. Darley, was an American illustrator, known for his illustrations in works by well-known 19th-century authors, including James Fenimore Cooper, Charles Dickens, Mary Mapes Dodge, Nathaniel Hawthorne, Washington Irving, George Lippard, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, Donald Grant Mitchell, Clement Clarke Moore, Francis Parkman, Harriet Beecher Stowe and Nathaniel Parker Willis. Over his career, he produced nearly 350 drawings for James Fenimore Cooper, which were later collected in a several-volume edition of Cooper's novels printed from 1859 to 1861. The books for sale came from the same set, although no dates nor advertisement regarding this set were found by us. We do not know if this is a part of a full set of JFC novels or if other authors were to be found in Dana Estes' "Illustrated Cabinet Editions." Hardcovers have green cloth boards with gold lettering & designs on spine, gold faux author signature on front, but no dust jackets. Spines have sun-fade. Gilt top page-edges. Deckled page-edges opposite spine. Interiors are complete, clean and text unmarked. Penciled inventory/ pricing in some front end-pages and Bretano's bookstore sticker in some rear end-pages. High-end book construction. Great shelf display. No copyrights claimed nor credited. No dates of publication nor printing. Promoted as Illustrated Cabinet Editions. Could have been published as early as 1875 to as late as 1905. Our estimate is 1890, just after Darley's death. No ISBN, LCCN, nor MSR. Thanks for looking. F.O.C. Darley; J.W. Ferguson Kennedy; E.H. Garrett; French Unattributed (illustratore). No Ownership Markings.

Aggiungi al carrelloHardcover. Condizione: Very Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. First edition of the widow Dodge's second and by far most popular novel, in original beveled brown boards. Title page in black and red (correct for first edition.) Publisher's gilt device to front and rear boards both bright; gilt title to spine somewhat more faded though… still easily legible. Spine rolled a minimal 3/16ths inch; board corners poking through. Some modest fraying to heel of spine, but this copy is what some would call "unsophisticated," meaning "No one has messed with it." Pages white and a delight to read, with only slight foxing to title page. Volume will close its own text block; grade it "very good." Four B&W plates including frontispiece remain secure. Although the three interior plates are captioned to indicate they refer to action occurring on pp. 243, 275, and 337, they are actually bound in at pp. 120, 192, and 288. Jacob Blanck in Volume Two of his "Bibliography of American Literature" explains this is correct; "The plates are inserted without relation to the positions indicated in the list of illustrations." Ornate period bookplate hand-signed by previous owner Mary D. Paxon of Walpole. N.H. (NOT an author signature.) This copy lacks any publisher's advertisements bound in at rear, though there is no evidence that any pages have been removed. The 1958 Hallmark Hall of Fame live television musical, directed by Sidney Lumet, starred Tab Hunter as Hans. (Our old acting instructor said "Watch Tab Hunter's hands. He never has any idea what to do with his hands.") 347 pp. Reduced from $1,625. Illustrated by F.O.C. Darley and Thomas Nast. (illustratore).

Aggiungi al carrelloHard Cover. Condizione: Very Good+ binding. 12mo. [8], 294, 8 (ads) pp., frontis. First edition. Unrelated signed note is pasted to the front free endpaper. As issued, in publisher's cloth. A very bright copy with only trivial wear to the spine ends and corners; it appears a preliminary blank, just behind the front free endpaper… has been excised; half title is present; contents clean. Hale, a Unitarian minister, was an educator, journalist, and author. Of his literary output, his The Man Without a Country is certainly his most remembered work. Written during the Civil War, it periodically resurfaces as relevant in modern time. But, as Francis J. Bosha argues in his biographical sketch, "his reform-minded advocacy of a variety of issues, from the abolition of slavery and improved race relations to religious tolerance, public education reform (to include half-year schooling and the abolition of grades and examinations), and even government regulation of monopolies and expanded public ownership, is most notable" Oxford American National Biography. This copy with a note card reading: "I am glad to do what you wish. Edward E. Hale / July 9, 1886.".
