This comes close to Darwin's work (on Lord Kelvin's work) of an analog tide predictor, but in this case Darwin is dealing with the gathering of data and ways in which good numbers could be collected without using a numbing mountain of inputs.

[++] The paper by (the deceased) Maxwell is actually not quite a paper by Maxwell, but a report by George Stokes on a letter that Maxwell wrote to D(avid) P(eck) Todd, so of course the content belongs to Maxwell, the resulting impact of which was providing a basis for the Michelson-Morley experiment. " Then in his article Ether for the Encyclopedia Britannica he again reviewed the problem of motion through the ether. The only possible earth-based experiment was to measure variations in the velocity of light on a double journey between two mirrors. Maxwell concluded that the time differences in different directions would be too small to detect. He proposed another method from timing the eclipses of the moons of Jupiter, which he later described in more detail in a letter to the American astronomer D. P. Todd, published after his death in the Royal Society Proceedings [the paper offered here] and in Nature. Darwin published his first papers on tides and tidal friction in the 1870's (his method of harmonic analysis was in use for decades in many parts of the world) and over the years his focus widened to encompass the formation of the solar system and of star systems.

The paper by the second son of Charles Darwin, the astronomer Sir George Howard Darwin (1845-1912), occupies 45 pp., a bound…in slip to correct a word therein, and a loose leaf with corrections to Darwin's paper. Other papers are by W. K. Brooks on the Lucifer, Young and Forbes on the velocity of white and coloured light, and some others. Some slight rubbing to the boards, otherwise a clean, nicely bound copy.
