Das in zwei Teile gegliederte Buch enthält umfassende Informationen zu den Prinzipien der arabischen Kavallerie, der Militärkleidung der Reiter, berühmten arabischen Pferderassen (Haymour, Bou-ghareb, Meizique), der Auswahl und dem Erwerb eines Pferdes, Ernährung, Hygiene, der Bedeutung der farbenprächtigen Reitattraktionen, dem Sattelzeug, der Tiermedizin und -krankheiten, verletzten Pferden, Kastration, verschiedenen Arten von Militärangriffen in der Wüste und deren Durchführung, Stammeskriegen sowie der Jagd auf Strauße, Gazellen und Falken. - Daumas (18031871), ein französischer General der 1. Kavalleriedivision, wurde 1835 nach Algerien versetzt, das Karl X. fünf Jahre zuvor erobert hatte. Daumas nahm an 18 Feldzügen in Algerien teil, darunter die Schlachten um Mascara und Tlemcen. Zwischen 1837 und 1839 residierte Daumas als Konsul in Mascara und lernte den Emir von Mascara persönlich kennen. Während seines Aufenthalts in Algerien erlernte Daumas die arabische Sprache und wurde einer der führenden Experten der französischen Armee für die arabische Kultur in Nordafrika. Die Stammesangehörigen schätzten ihn für seine Reitkünste.
