During this period the Petroff has gained a new supporter in the person of the former world champion Petrosian. Some commentators even attribute the loss of the title in 1969 to his failure to carry on playing the Petroff after it had brought him two comfortable draws late in the match against Spassky. Meanwhile, older supporters of the defence such as Smyslov and Bronstein have not lost faith in it. Even the former world title holder Karpov has adopted it occasionally.
