The first edition of Jacob de Gheyn's drill book appeared in 1607 and his drill became common throughout 17th century Europe. The work is split into three parts, Caliver Drill (42 plates), musket drill (43 plates) and pike drill (32… plates). The manual uses 117 captioned illustrations (no text other than captions and very brief introduction) to clearly demonstrate drill for soldiers. Shows how to load and fire or merely carry a matchlock piece. In addition detailed captioned illustrations show the various movemoents and postures to be adopted during use of the pike.
