Hardcover. Condizione: Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. 192 pages. Translated with a Preface and Notes by David Magarshack, with an essay on Translating Shakespeare translated by Manya Harari. The Notes provide brief biographical information on persons, chiefly artists and writers, mentioned in the text. Illustrated with b&w photos and artwork (by Leonid Pasternak) on plates, portrait drawings of BP, Akhmatova, Mayakovsky by G. Annenkov, ms. and letter facsimiles. 8vo, black cloth with rubbed gilt lettering on spine, faded gray topstain, age-toning and foxing to end papers, light shelf wear, smudges to boards. Name of former owner Prof. Warner Berthoff and date Dec. 1959 written on ffep with one page-ref. note, his underscoring and/or marginalia on approximately 60 pages. Laid in are several newspaper clippings on Pasternak, including his response in The New Yorker to comments on Dr. Zhivago by Edmund Wilson.

The Intro is 34 pages long; Wilson's "Turgenev and the Life-Giving Drop" is 61 pages. 8vo, teal cloth sunned to brown on spine and along edges of boards, with silver gilt lettering, faded gray topstain, light foxing and soil to end pages and edges, scant shelf wear. Name of former owner Prof. Warner Berthoff and date February 1959 written on ffep, his marks in pencil (no notes) on approximately 12 pages in the Wilson essay.
