Rosten's novel took inspiration from the experiences of his wartime friend Ralph Greenson, a psychoanalytic doctor who was one of the first in his field to link post-traumatic stress disorder (although that terminology was not yet in use) with the ordeals of war. After studying with Saul Bass at the Kann Institute of Art in Los Angeles, photographer Robert Willoughby began working for magazines such as "Life," "Look," and "Harper's Bazaar" in the late 1940s. The gangster owner of a nightclub on a carnival pier is tormented by his love for the club's star, who herself is in love with a local businessman with dreams of buying out the club. An early role for Miller, who appeared in 14 films directed by legendary independent filmmaker Roger Corman between 1955 and 1961, and would continue to work with Corman throughout his career. Zach Tutor is an artist and curator living in Oxford, Mississippi.
