Hardcover. Condizione: Fine. 1st Edition. Translated from the Finnish. Large format hardcover, 183 pages, illustrated throughout with colour photos, NOT ex-library. Weight over 1.2kg. First page signed by the Author. Book is clean and bright throughout with unmarked text, free of stamps, firmly bound. Issued without a dust jacket. -- This richly illustrated volume chronicles the 2006 expedition by the Airborne Ranger Club of Finland, the first Finnish team to reach the Geographic North Pole without external assistance. Starting from Ward Hunt Island in northern Canada and traversing over 800 kilometres of the Arctic ice field, the seven-man team reached the Pole after 54 days and 23 hours. At the time, only 32 people in the world had achieved this goal. The text provides a detailed account of the logistical and physical demands of unsupported polar travel, detailing the management of extreme cold reaching -45 to -50 degrees Celsius and the navigation of near-impassable pressure ridges. The book highlights the team's two-year preparation phase, which included rigorous physical training such as dragging 30-kilogram car tyres to simulate sledge pulling, alongside product development with equipment manufacturers to adapt gear for high-friction snow. It details the final acclimatisation at the Inuit village of Resolute Bay and describes the technical difficulties of "Arctic swimming" - crossing open leads in the ice by floating sledges or using dry suits. The narrative also covers the challenges of working with camera equipment in extreme cold, as well as the impact of global warming in the context of accelerating Arctic sea ice loss. It recalls a final storm-force headwind and white-out conditions requiring 24 hours of continuous skiing to reach the Pole on 20 April 2006. Appendices record GPS campsite coordinates, daily and polar statistics, physiological data such as the participants' cholesterol levels, food rations and equipment lists. Signed by Author(s).…
