Wraps. Condizione: Very good. Presumed First Edition, First printing. [2], 31, [3] pages. Illustrations. Notes. Cryptography was used extensively during World War II, with a plethora of code and cipher systems fielded by the nations involved. In addition, the theoretical and practical aspects of cryptanalysis, or codebreaking, was much advanced. Probably the most important codebreaking event of the war was the successful decryption by the Allies of the German "Enigma" Cipher. The first complete break into Enigma was accomplished by Poland around 1932; the techniques and insights used were passed to the French and British Allies just before the outbreak of the war in 1939. They were substantially improved by British efforts at the Bletchley Park research station during the war. Decryption of the Enigma Cipher allowed the Allies to read important parts of German radio traffic on important networks and was an invaluable source of military intelligence throughout the war. Along with breaking the Japanese diplomatic cryptosystem, usually referred to as "PURPLE," probably the greatest example of Allied cryptanalytic success in World War II was breaking of the German Enigma machine. This cryptodevice was used by all of the German armed forces as the primary cryptosystem for all units below Army level or the equivalent. As D-Day approached, other German cryptodevices, the SZ-42 and the various T-52 machines, assumed great importance since they were used by the higher commands of the German armed forces. Many references to these German machines in the histories fail to provide information on what they looked like or how they worked. Another group of cryptodevices, those invented by Fritz Menzer for the Abwehr (Counterintelligence), have received little or no notice in the literature and are unknown to the public. This work is an attempt to remedy both lacks.

Wraps. Condizione: Very good. Presumed First Edition, First printing. 34, [2] pages. Illustrations. Notes. Cover has minor wear and sticker residue. Most Americans are aware of the era of lawlessness in this country that began with the passage of the Eighteenth Amendment to the Constitution in 1919. The institution of Prohibition brought with it major law enforcement problems, whose effects continue to be felt today. Few people, however, are aware of the major role played by communications intelligence in the enforcement of the Prohibition laws. The files of the United States Coast Guard and the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), including the files of the Radio Division of the Department of Commerce, show that radio was used on a large scale in connection with rum-running activities. The radio operations of the rum-running organizations were, in fact, comparable in size, technical skill, and organization with the radio operation that would be conducted by enemy agents in WWII. The Center for Cryptologic History (CCH) keeps history alive by enhancing the knowledge and decision-making abilities of the intelligence community (IC). A critical asset, the CCH provides a historical and objective account of cryptologic history for the IC, the Department of Defense, other government agencies, academia, and the general public. At the CCH, we believe learning from the past can help improve future decision making. Through the National Cryptologic School (NCS), we offer numerous learning opportunities for intelligence professionals. These include a variety of history courses, seminars, illustrated lectures, and case studies. Our many publications, classified and unclassified, document the past and enable today's cryptologic professionals to benefit from a historical perspective as they tackle increasingly challenging missions. CCH staff consists of professional historians who are veterans of cryptologic operations.
