Wahn und wann einstellt. Er bezieht sich auf die Art und Weise der Interaktion von Vokal und nachfolgendem Konsonanten, wobei der Vokal im einen Fall (vgl. wann) vom folgenden (fest angeschlossenen) Konsonanten abgeschnitten zu werden scheint, während er im anderen Fall (vgl. Wahn) nur lose mit ihm verbunden zu sein scheint. Das Silbenschnittkonzept wird zunächst in seiner geschichtlichen Entwicklung mit Belegen aus fünf Jahrhunderten dargestellt und den vorhandenen phonetischen Daten und aktuellen phonologischen Theorien gegenübergestellt. Den zweiten Teil der vorliegenden Untersuchung bildet die Synthese der Silbenschnittphänomene, die zu einer Reanalyse im Rahmen einer neu entwickelten Silbentheorie führt. Der abschließende typologische Teil entwickelt im Sprachvergleich verwendbare Kriterien und erörtert silbenschnittähnliche Phänomene in nichtgermanischen Sprachen, die bislang kaum oder gar nicht mit der Anschlußprosodie in Verbindung gebracht wurden.
