The Niagara map is by John Eddy, showing from Lake Erie to Lake Ontario. Eddy was a fine cartographer who produced classic maps of New York State and City in the early 1800's, but who died under mysterious circumstances at age 33 in 1817. This map is among the earliest to identify Buffalo. It is shown here as Buffaloe or New Amsterdam. Most earlier maps, including Simeon DeWitt's 1804 Map of New York State, show only New Amsterdam. This gazetteer was reprinted from a section of Smyth's Topographical Description of Upper Canada. Smyth was selected as Canada's first Surveyor General in 1793.
