Prior methods of testing concrete durability involved conducting hardness and compressive strength tests. However, the author argues that these methods are not reliable indicators of how concrete will perform when used in pavements. The author's method involves using a modified version of the ASTM C131 standard abrasion test. In this method, concrete specimens are placed in a drum with steel balls and rotated for two hours. The amount of wear on the specimens is then measured. The author tested ten different types of concrete, each made with a different combination of coarse and fine aggregate. The results of the tests showed that the type of coarse aggregate had a significant impact on the durability of the concrete and proposes this new testing method as a more accurate way to predict how concrete will perform when used in pavements.
