Hardcover. Condizione: new. Hardcover. Welcome to the wondrous world of Vaginal Davis: visual artist, punk rocker, "drag terrorist" and genderqueer iconPublished with Moderna Museet, Stockholm. In Vaginal Davis' pioneering and incredibly diverse oeuvre, punk meets glamour, queer activism meets racial justice and resistance meets joy. An icon of contemporary queer history, Vaginal Davis has made scenes for a living: through personas as diverse and outrageous as Rayvn Cymone McFarlane or John Dean Egg III, and as a part of bands including Cholita! The Female Menudo and the Afro Sisters. Since then, she has achieved cult status as a self-proclaimed "sexual repulsive" and a "drag terrorist"--shattering notions of mainstream conformity and the sanitization of Black, queer and Chicano cultures for appropriation by white audiences. An uproarious celebration of Davis' work and cultural legacy, this bilingual English/Swedish catalog is Z-bound (English on one side, Swedish on the other) and takes readers on a whirlwind tour across the artist's protean output spanning music, performance, installations, lectures and visual art: from her early punk shows to her recent "fantasy library" imagined as a teenager's bedroom. A final section, "Dear Ms. Davis," includes heartfelt tributes to the artist from fellow "colleagues, concubines and coconspirators."Vaginal Davis was born intersex in Los Angeles to parents of Black Creole, Mexican, Jewish and German descent. Naming herself after radical Black feminist Angela Davis, she emerged in the queer punk scenes of Bushwick and Los Angeles in the 1980s before moving to Berlin in the early 2000s. Paperback. Condizione: Very good. First Edition. ART JOURNAL FALL 2020 VOL 79 NO 3 with art or text by Lynne Cooke, Catherine Opie, Zoe Leonard, Richard Fung, Greg Bordowitz, Vaginal Davis, Louise Lawler and others. 100 pages. Paper with stiff cover. Very good condition.

Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. Neuware - The artist Vaginal Davis certainly moves 'on dangerous ground' with her transgressive shuffling of gender and genre boundaries. The self-described 'sexual repulsive' co-founded several art/punk bands in her expansive 40-year-plus career, namely Afro Sisters, ¡Cholita!, Pedro, Muriel & Esther (PME), black fag and Tenderloin. As a writer and 'Whoracle et Delphi', Ms. Davis turns her quirky hairy eyeball to the collective practice of making music in the saucy underground scenes of Los Angeles and Berlin. In their contributions, longtime comrades and collaborators Bibbe Hansen (artist and Warhol Silver Factory habitué) and Felix Knoke (guest performer for The Hidden Cameras and band member of Tenderloin) rave about joint performances and rehearsals, divulging sacred secrets and rifts. Bruce 'Judy' LaBruce, Glen Meadmore and Lisa 'Suckdog' Carver make surprise guest appearances, along with images from live performance spectacles The White to Be Angry, Trust Fund, Interracial Dating Game, We're Taking Over, Afro De Sade and Camp/Anti-Camp: A Queer Guide to Everyday Life. This is the second volume of the book series 'What Moves Artists' by Gropius Bau, Berlin. …

Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. Bruce 'Judy' LaBruce, Glen Meadmore und Lisa 'Suckdog' Carver überraschen in Gastauftritten, ergänzt von Bildern aus spektakulären Live-Performances von The White to Be Angry, Trust Fund, Interracial Dating Game, We're Taking Over, Afro De Sade sowie Camp/Anti-Camp: A Queer Guide to Everyday Life.

Soft cover. Condizione: Near Fine. 1st Edition. First printing. 4to. (8 1/2 x 11 ). 47 pp. Profusely illustrated in B & W. Original stapled glossy white photographic covers. Also laid in is a highly amusing Xeroxed letter soliciting subscriptions to Fertile. It reads (in part) Thank you for loving Fertile. Fertile loves love. She has two great big black breasts that are constantly lactating love. . . For $25.00 you get the Fertile. . . package which includes a lifetime (either yours of ours) subscription to Fertile. . . Published in five issues between 1982 and 1991, Vaginal Davis important and immensely influential queercore zine, Fertile. La Toyah Jackson Magazine, was her most significant publication. While working at UCLA s Placement & Career Planning Center, she was permitted to use their Xerox machine to print and produce issues of Fertile. There is no record of the how many of each issue she created, but it is clearly a very small number. They highlighted the drag scene in LA and, as such, were pioneering and rare. She called her style as terrorist drag in the Los Angeles punk scene. Davis has finally ascended to highly visible and notable stature in the art world with her first major solo exhibition in the U. S. at MoMA PSI entitled Vaginal Davis: Magnificent Product which runs from October 9, 2025 - March 2, 2026. Although not billed as a retrospective, it does showcase art from the five decades of her career, including installations, sculptures, paintings, audio works and, of course, the zines. It has been lauded by articles in the Art in America, NYT, ARTnews, Hyperallergic, Los Angeles Times, et al. In the words of Daniel Larkin, in his article on Davis in the October 9, 2025 issue of Hyperallergic, Vaginal Davis was The Fairy godmother of the Lost Angeles queercore scene, she brought gender-bending to the punk and hardcore music scenes of LA and New York in the 1970 and 80s before further establishing herself as an artist. In her review of the MoMA PS1 exhibition, McKenzie Wark in an Art in America article says that Davis is one of the leading artists of her generation. This, the Paris Issue , is not dated but likely was published in 1989 based on a small internal ad which states We re celebrating our 1st Anniversary on Sept. 9, 1989. . . It is very bright with tiny areas of soil, else near fine with only light wear. Rare: OCLC lists fewer than 8 libraries worldwide that have any of the five issues of Fertile.…
