Character Project is "an ongoing artistic initiative to celebrate the extraordinary people, from all walks of life, who make this country unique. USA assembled a team of 11 world-class photographers to capture the character of America during the summer of 2008." The photographers, each of whom has written a one-page artist's statement and is represented by a sample of their work were: Dawoud Bey; Anna Mia Davidson; Jeff Dunas; David Eustace; Joe Fornabaio; Mary Ellen Mark; Eric McNatt; Eric Ogden; Sylvia Plachy; Richard Renaldi; and Marla Rutherford. The subjects included: Renaldi's photos of fishermen in Alaska; Davidson's organic farmers in the Pacific Northwest; summer parades in NYC by Mark; the life of Columbia College students in Chicago by Bey; Eustace's portraits of men and women he found along US 50; musicians of Michigan by Ogden; and beauty queens of Texas by McNatt. The original oversized announcement card and press packet for an exhibition titled "Indivisible: Stories of American Community" and held at the Center for Creative Photography, University of Arizona, Tucson, July 14 - September 30, 2001. The show was part of a project that documented the social conditions in twelve American communities through photographs and oral histories. The photographers were Dawoud Bey, Bill Burke, Debbie Fleming Caffery, Lucy Capehart, Lynn Davis, Terry Evans, Lauren Greenfield, Joan Liftin, Reagan Louie, Danny Lyon, Sylvia Plachy, and Eli Reed. The locations were: the North Pacific Coast of Alaska; Ithaca, NY; San Francisco; Navajo Nation, AZ and NM; Eau Claire, SC; Delray Beach, FL; Western North Carolina; Stony Brook, NY; San Juan, TX; Chicago; Philadelphia; and the Yaak Valley, MT. Stiff card, machine-folded once to 4 pages; 3 illustrations; 11.5 x 6 inches. Laid-in is the center's 4-page press release and a cover letter.
