He climbed the ladder in the Company and then in service of the British Army, eventually traveling through the Hindu Kush to modern-day Uzbekistan and Iran. He published a best-selling narrative of his journeys, 'Travels to Bokhara,' and was awarded a medal by the Royal Geographical Society. Burnes returned to India as a diplomat before precipitating colonial intrigue in Afghanistan as part of 'The Great Game,' where he was then assassinated prior to the first Anglo-Afghan War, but only after killing six assailants.
