All books are #214 except V2 is #325 and V3 is #335. Each book has a vivid colored title page and vibrant b/w engraving with tissue paper and numerous illustrations throughout. Olive-cloth covered boards are in good to very good condition with sunning on spine, corner bends, light spine bumps and fraying, light rubbing and some stains (see photos for exact marks), but overall attractive; paper labels are toned, rubbed, and have water spots/stains. Top edge gilt, other edges hand cut, see photos. End papers and interior pages very good+ condition with no ownership marks or writing observed. Pages are clean, illustrations are stunningly vibrant, all tissue frontispieces (throughout book) observed were intact. All bindings are sturdy except for V8 is cracked at gutter, see last photo. A generally VG+ clean tightly bound set of early editions with only some light wear and some neat colour touch-ups to some extremities. Volume 1 of this set has a pencil note to verso of front free endpaper to say it was previously purchased at James Bain Booksellers in 1917 for £6. Ex Lbris Oliver Brett (3rd Viscount Esher, who was a British peer and politician) with his fine engraved bookplate to each volume. Charles Lamb (1775 1834) was an English essayist, poet, and antiquarian, best known for his Essays of Elia and for the children's book Tales from Shakespeare, co-authored with his sister, Mary Lamb (1764 1847). Friends with such literary luminaries as Samuel Taylor Coleridge, Robert Southey, William Wordsworth, Dorothy Wordsworth and William Hazlitt, Lamb was at the centre of a major literary circle in England. He has been referred to by E. V. Lucas, his principal biographer, as "the most lovable figure in English literature".…
