From the introduction: "In South Africa, as in all civilized countries, students and scholars have long since felt the need for a work of reference presenting the life histories of all those who have since the carliest European contact with the southern extremity of Africa made a contribution of importance to the course of South African history, After three universities had, each in its own way, offered to house a research project, with state aid, for a national dictionary of South African biography, the Suid-Afrikaanse Akademie vir Wetenskap en Kuns began in 1959 to give the project its strong support. As a result of its efforts, the National Council for Social Research, Department of Education, Arts and Science (the department of higher education from 1968) adopted the compilation of a biographical dic tionary as one of its own research projects. Under the supervision of a board of control an editor-in-chief was appointed to plan the Dictionary of South African biography and was given the opportunity of visiting the offices of biographical dictionaries abroad. At the begin ning of 1963 in editorial office was opened in the South African public library, Cape Town. Unlike other, similar undertakings, which were dependent on large private donations, the generosity of publishing firms, or funds provided by established cultural or scientific organizations, the DsaB has been in a privileged position from the outset. The considerable costs of both the compilation and the publication of the series have, as far as the main series is concerned, been provided for, and form part of official support for research in the humanitles. The Editor in Chief changed from this volume to D W Kruger. This volume has not been subjected as much by damp storage. The effects are similar but less pronounced. The covers are scuffed and marked and very lightly worn. The papertrims are marked from shelving and storage. Within, the contents are clear and benign, competent and confident. Volume III (ISBN: 0624008487). The Chief Editor changed with this volume to C J Beyers. As with Volume II the damp storage has not affected this volume as much. The pages do have some tidemarks and wrinkling. The contents have evidence of use - as do the other volumes - throughout. The pages are benign, competent and certain. The papertrims are marked from storage and shelving. Volume IV (ISBN: 0409091847). By far the neatest of the set. The cover is confident despite the scuffing and marks. The binding is youthful.
