Aggiungi al carrelloBound with a portrait engraving of De Lannoy by Houbraken. Juliana Cornelia de Lannoy (1738 1782) was among the most renowned (female) poets of the eighteenth century. She debuted at the age of 27 with her poem "Aan myn Geest" (To my Spirit), in which she argues the spiritual freedom of women and the right to arrange their lives as they see fit. She rejects the notion that women are destined exclusively for the role of wife and mother. Throughout her career she continued to address the relationship between the sexes and did not shy away from critically questioning the conventional perceptions of men and women. As of this moment, nothing is known about Lannoy's contact with other female poets. However, we do know that she was friends with the poet Simon van der Waal (1736?-1781), and also corresponded with poets and writers such as Willem Bilderdijk (1756-1831) and Rhijnvis Feith (1753-1824), both great admirers of her work.Lannoy set to work on on this collection of poems in 1778. It was dedicated to Wilhelmina of Prussia received with great acclaim and rave reviews. Contemporaries praised De Lannoy as "The Sappho of our century, and the honor of her lineage".Note: see also SKU 67549, with a loose portrait engraving of Juliana Cornelia de Lannoy by Houbraken.female authors women literature poetry Dutch Lannoy Houbraken Bound in half leather and marbled/mottled paper, 22.2 x 13.7 cm.
