Rare édition original…e et unique. En 1715, Guillot de Marcilly, théologien, part pour Amsterdam : il y fait la rencontre de Phillipe de Gentil, marquis de Langallerie, dont la conversion au calvinisme en 1711 avait fait couler beaucoup d'encre, et entreprend auprès de lui une campagne de prosélytisme. Le marquis jure devant témoins que, si Marcilly parvient à le convaincre de son erreur, il rentrera dans la communion romaine. Inquiétés par les efforts de Marcilly, les réfugiés français réformés tentent de l'intimider ; il est contraint de se retirer dans les Pays-bas catholiques, où il poursuit sa correspondance avec le marquis. Mais ses efforts sont vains : Phillipe de Langallerie peine à se décider, préoccupé par des pourparlers entrepris avec la Turquie. Au bout de quatre mois, Marcilly baisse les bras et met un terme à leur relation épistolaire. En 1716, le marquis est arrêté par l'empereur d'Autriche ; il meurt un an plus tard au château de Raab, où il était détenu. Ne résulte ainsi de leurs entretiens que ce curieux ouvrage. Un lecteur d'inclinaison protestante du XVIIIe siècle a annoté le premier quart de l'ouvrage - pestant contre les arguments de Marcilly, il écrit par exemple : « la lumière de la vérité ne se trouve pas dans ton Eglise, tout y est falsifié ou fabuleux, témoin de la prétendue conversion dont s'agit que j'appelle perversion » ; « tu blasphèmes misérable hérétique » ; ou encore « tu mens mon Babillard ». La plus importante de ces notes manuscrites est datée de 1774 (p. 100). Provenance : " EX LIBRIS D. J. DAVID ", imprimé, ex-libris contrecollé sur le contreplat supérieur (XXe siècle). Non-identifié. Un coin rogné, les autres frottés. Quelques taches, petites mouillures, salissures ou rousseurs, très largement marginales à quelques feuillets, quelques cahiers brunis.
