Condizione: Good. The format is approximately 3.5 inches by 5.75 inches. The front two thirds has a head and shoulder shot of David Whitfield and the caption at the bottom reads David Whitfield Exclusive Decca Recording Artist Copyright. The inscription reads To Valerie Sincerely David Whitfield. The back side lists David Whitfi…eld's 45/78 rep records, his EP (45 rpm) records and his LP (33 1/3 rem) records and has the date of Feb. 59. David Whitfield (2 February 1925 15 January 1980) was a popular British male tenor vocalist from Hull. In November 1953 he became the first British male artist to have a number one single in the UK with "Answer Me" (Lita Roza having had a number one with "(How Much Is) That Doggie in the Window?" in April that year). He sang in the choir at his church during his childhood and entertained his fellow members of the Royal Navy during the Second World War. After the war, he stayed in the navy until June 1950 having had a long spell in Singapore where he broadcast on radio.[3] He appeared on Opportunity Knocks, a talent show on Radio Luxembourg on April 30, 1950, and won that round. He subsequently appeared on the all-winners show on May 21, 1950, singing "Good-Bye" from White Horse Inn. This led to his joining the touring stage show of "Opportunity Knocks" hosted by Hughie Green for a while. After leaving the navy, he was given the opportunity to sing in a West-end cabaret at the Washington Hotel, Curzon St., London where he was a great success. This led to a variety stage tour. His first recording to reach the Top 10 of the UK Singles Chart in October 1953 was "Bridge of Sighs", written by Billy Reid. "Answer Me" (later recorded with different lyrics as "Answer Me, My Love") reached number one in the UK. Both versions have appeared on CD. Whitfield had other hits in the 1950s, and was the most successful British male singer in America during that period. In addition, he was the first British male vocalist to earn a gold disc and the third overall. He was also the first to reach the Top Ten of the Billboard Top 100, and the first artist from Britain to sell over a million copies of a record in the US. All of his hits were released by the Decca record label in the UK. His only album to reach the UK Albums Chart was The World of David Whitfield, which reached Number 19. He used orchestras, including those of Stanley Black, fellow Decca artist Mantovani and Roland Shaw, as backing accompaniment for said hits. "Cara Mia" spent ten weeks at the pole position in the UK, making it one of the biggest selling British records in the pre-rock days. That recording co-credits Mantovani and his Orchestra and Chorus. Whitfield appeared on The Ed Sullivan Show and the 1954 Royal Command Performance. He continued to perform regularly across the globe, while living in Hull in the UK. Many of his singles were issued on LP and have been reissued in recent years on CD compilations under license. There were three 45 rpm EP specials (195960), one entitled "The Good Old Songs" and the other two featuring numbers from "Rose Marie" and "The Desert Song," two musical shows in which Whitfield toured. On leaving Decca he recorded two singles for His Master's Voice (196263). His last LP, made for Philips in 1975 and entitled Hey There! It's David Whitfield, included his third recording of "Cara Mia" (he had already recorded a stereo re-make for Decca in 1966 for an album entitled Great Songs for Young Lovers). Whitfield's last single was for Denman, a coupling of "Land of Hope and Glory" and "When You Lose the One You Love" (1977). A statue in the memory of Whitfield was unveiled outside of the New Theatre in Hull on 31 August 2012, before the opening night of a show celebrating the life and music of Whitfield. Photograph with autograph/Advertising card Presumed first edition, one of multiple impressions but may be uniquely inscribed.

Condizione: Good. The format is approximately 3.25 inches by 5.75 inches. Front side is a large head and shoulders picture of Terry Dene, with the printed caption at the bottom reading TERRY DENE Exclusive Decca Recording Artist Copyright and signed at the bottom Terry Dene. The reverse presents information on Terry Dene and ava…ilable 45/78 r.p.m. records and contact information for the Terry Dene Fan Club and Decca Records with a date in the lower right corner of Feb. 58. Terry Dene (born Terence Williams, 20 December 1938) is a British rock music singer popular in the late 1950s and early 60s. He had three Top Twenty hits between June 1957 and May 1958. He was discovered by Paul Lincoln at the 2i's Coffee Bar (the London club that helped launch Tommy Steele, Adam Faith and Cliff Richard) in Soho in the late 1950s. Jack Good, producer of Six-Five Special, and Dick Rowe helped him obtain a recording contract with Decca. At the time he was regarded as the British Elvis and recognized as one of the best voices of the rock and roll era of pre-Beatles Britain. In 1957, his first single, "A White Sport Coat", sold in excess of 350,000 copies in the first seven weeks and together with his own version of "Start Movin'" at number 14, put his records in the Top 20 of the UK Singles Chart twice in the same year, securing his name in the Guinness Book of Records. His recording of "Stairway of Love" in 1958 remained in the chart for eight weeks. He toured Britain, was one of the first to appear in the BBC Television's first pop show, Six-Five Special in April 1957, and appeared in a film, The Golden Disc (1958). After being arrested for public drunkenness and breaking a shop window in 1958, and ripping out a telephone box from the wall whilst claiming his passionate love for Edna Savage, Dene was branded as a 'bad apple' and the exemplifier of the 'evil of rock and roll' by the press, and was then conscripted into the Army for national service. He was originally expected to report to Winchester Barracks, where he was due to join the King's Royal Rifle Corps on 7 July 1958, but his call-up was initially deferred until contractual commitments had been completed.[6] When he finally did go in, it was so badly handled by the press (who filmed and publicized his arrival at the barracks) that after two months Dene had to be discharged on psychological grounds as his mental health had deteriorated considerably. By that time the press had almost ruined his career, and the Army offered him a pension as a form of compensation which Dene refused. Dene later joined the Larry Parnes' stable of stars and toured with them around Britain. Disheartened by the bad publicity in 1964, Dene turned his back on the British pop scene and became an Evangelist, crossing over to singing and writing spiritual and gospel music, recording three gospel albums. He traveled abroad as an itinerant preacher, playing in churches, prisons and other venues, and preached in the Scandinavian Lutheran Church for five years in Sweden where he married for the second time. Two of the gospel albums were released in 197273 on Pilgrim Records. In 1974, Dene released a book and album, both entitled I Thought Terry Dene Was Dead, and around 1984 reformed his group, the Dene Aces, with Brian Gregg. He released an album, The Real Terry Dene, in 1997 which was voted as one of the top forty best listening CDs, and has continued to appear in rock and roll shows. A Decca compilation was released in December 2004 by Vocalion Records. In October 2007, Dene created his own company and label with his partner, Countess Lucia Liberati, and in December 2012, released a new CD, The Best of Terry Dene, featuring a compilation of 12 tracks of his own choice, including his own version of "Mystery Train", and a remix of "C'min and Be Loved, So Long", which was written by Dene. They created the Official Terry Dene YouTube channel: from 2018, the project aimed to release a video for each one of Dene's tracks, new and old. T.
