Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good. Condizione sovraccoperta: Very Good. 1999 Erskine Press hardcover edition. Light reading wear else very good condition. From the dustjacket: A century ago a Belgian expedition headed for the Antarctic on board the Belgica (August 1897 - November 1899). It was the first Antarctic expedition of a purely scientific nature and the journey provided a wealth of information and photographic material. The Antarctic explorers were destined never to reach the pole but they became the first people to winter on the Antarctic ice - perhaps an even more spectacular achievement. On board the ship were, among others, the Belgian Commander Adrien de Gerlache, the famous American doctor and polar explorer Frederick Cook, and the future conqueror of the South Pole, the Norwegian ROALD AMUNDSEN. Other books were published about the expedition after the adventure but one document did remain unpublished: the personal diary of Amundsen. The diary is edited by glaciologist and Antarctic expert Dr. HUGO DECLEIR (VUB, Free University of Brussels) who has provided comments on and explanations about the text. Amundsen wrote this diary for his own personal use and it provides a fascinating insight into the struggle for survival on the ice during the Antarctic winter and into the pressures involved in being part of a multinational crew. It was this experience which fired Amundsen's ambitions to explore the Polar Regions.…

Its 27 scholarly contributions examine the historical background of Antarctic exploration and the Belgica expedition as well as its scientific legacy, including cartography, geology, glaciology, meteorology, oceanography, marine biology, biodiversity and modern Belgian Antarctic research. Includes historic photographs, maps, colour plates, scientific diagrams and an extensive bibliography of publications relating to the 1897-1899 Belgica expedition. First edition.
