Né à Grasse le 5 avril 1732, Jean-Honoré Fragonard rejoint Paris à l'âge de cinq ans. Élève de Chardin puis de Boucher, il connaît un succès foudroyant, mais tombe rapidement dans l'oubli. Il faut attendr…e le milieu du XIXe siècle pour que son œuvre soit redécouvert par les collectionneurs et les historiens de l'art. Génie de la peinture et du dessin, Fragonard est marqué par les voyages qu'il accomplit en Italie, dans les Flandres et en Hollande. La confrontation avec des paysages nouveaux mais surtout avec les artistes des siècles passés, tels que Michel-Ange ou Rubens, est pour lui une source d'inspiration et d'émerveillement inépuisable qu'il retranscrit de façon magistrale dans de nombreux dessins. C'est aussi dans les scènes de la vie quotidienne que Fragonard donne libre cours à son imagination et à sa rapidité d'exécution. Ces sujets, parfois légers, ont fait la réputation de l'artiste sans qu'il ne délaisse jamais le « grand genre » mythologique et religieux. Il prête également son crayon à l'illustration de textes littéraires, comme le Roland furieux de l'Arioste, Don Quichotte de Cervantes ou les Contes de La Fontaine. Avec Fragonard, Grasse est aussi le berceau d'une famille d'artistes. Son épouse Marie-Anne Gérard est peintre de miniatures. Leur fils Alexandre-Évariste accomplit une brillante carrière de peintre dans la première moitié du XIXe siècle, tout comme sa belle-sœur et élève, Marguerite Gérard. Présentant une soixantaine de dessins issus des collections du musée du Louvre en regard des collections des musées de Grasse, cette exposition et son catalogue offrent aux visiteurs un large panorama de l'œuvre graphique foisonnant de Jean-Honoré Fragonard et de sa famille.
