From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - Cover a bit stained, otherwise a very good and clean copy. - From the text: Tragedy is back! Both Shakespeare and the Greeks can be found at every theatre festival in Europe, the twentieth century staged tragedies in such great numbers that one can easily say that it exceeded all the previous centuries together. Theoretical studies followed this tendency, an outburst of bibliography on tragedy really washed over the market. Or was it on the tragic? Or is this only a secondary distinction? We will take a brief look at the reception history of two of the most important Greek tragedies, the Oedipus Rex (OR) and Oedipus Coloneus (OC) by Sophocles, and ask what kind of blind spots may be detected in the history of their interpretation and performance. They deal with the curious ways in which, in the opinion of two gods, the conception of the human takes place. Trying to convince the Furies to respect the will of Zeus, the supreme male and father, Apollo and Athena, in the vs. 658-664 and 734-740, are lecturing them about some biological aspects of the conception. A man is able to produce life all by himself, a woman is merely a temporary vessel who carries the semen. Sprache: Englisch Gewicht in Gramm: 550.

From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - A very good and clean copy. - From the text: Why we are still interested in Sophocles today? Is it just the done thing to recall some of his works, or are we really concerned? Does the spirit of Sophocles still touch us today, has it something to say to this technological, late-capitalist society, an apparently very wealthy and happy era, but definitely disturbed by neurosis, depression and individualism? It is clear that a celebration of Sophocles (or any other artist), in terms of commemorating traditional high standards, is not a very useful perspective. It might be appropriate to remember that, in a Brechtian way, most contemporary producers use Sophocles in order to get to know themselves, ourselves, our position in the world, our identity, in order to make statements about that contradictory and complicated human being we are. As Eleni Varopoulou has said: «The concept of (Brechtian) usage of the tragic texts has frequently been opposed to the concept of their revival, which was promoted in Greece, declaring at once the restoration of a national poetic heritage and the steady recourse to certain models of presentation, in order to validate an authentic manner of staging, undisturbed from the distant past to the present day. Ultimately, usage means an interpretative and staging process which, independent of its more specific procedures, reveals a dialectical posture and not an axiomatic standpoint towards Greek classical dramaturgy». From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - A very good and clean copy. - From the text: Looking at the current sociological and cultural situation in Europe, we must be aware of the fact that we are living in transitional times, in circumstances dominated by a POST-feeling. This tricky prefix is telling us that from the beginning of the twentieth century on (or more specifically, since the Parisian May Revolution in 1968), people realized that something was over, and that there was a definite gap between times of former ideals (history as it used to be) and an era that came afterwards. Times changed in a very profound way and a series of really fundamental transformations obliged us to investigate our traditional habits of thinking, talking and writing. This POST-feeling was not always meant to be a radical new departure or a revolutionary start, but often implied a sharpened new consciousness of former ideological and intellectual positions. The Ritual Theatre of Theodoros Terzopoulos outlines the story of the Athenian-based Attis Theatre and the way its founder and director, Theodoros Terzopoulos, introduced bio-energetic presences of the body on the stage, in an attempt to redefine and reappraise what it means today not only to have a body, but to fully be a body.Terzopoulos created a very specific attitude towards life and death, and it is this broad perspective on energy and consciousness that makes his work so appealing both to a general public and to students of arts, theatre and drama. Freddy Decreus' study charts the career of Greece's most acclaimed theatre director and provides a spiritual and philosophic answer in times where former Western meta-narratives have failed.
