The hepatoprotective action is likely related to its potent antioxidative and anti-inflammatory activity. Neutralizing reactive oxygen species by non enzymatic mechanism and enhancing the activity of original natural hepatic antioxidants enzymes may be the main mechanisms against injury. These data provide a scientific explanation for the folkloric uses of Polygonum bistorta and tannic acid in the treatments of hepatic disorders. The findings provide a rationale for further studies on pharmacological evaluation. Furthermore additional studies on mechanism of action at molecular level are required.
