The overall objective was to contribute to a better understanding of donkey diversity with a view to its conservation and genetic improvement, and more specifically: to evaluate morphological characteristics; to assess body measurements of donkeys; to establish, based on body measurements, equations for predicting the live weight of donkeys; to estimate biometric indices of donkeys based on body measurements and to analyze genetic variability, and to establish the genetic structure and relationships among donkey populations. To this end, a sample of 174 adult donkeys (96 males and 78 females) was observed in 7 localities and 3 markets within the study area. The results show that there is significant phenotypic variability among donkeys in the highlands of northwestern Cameroon. Das allgemeine Ziel bestand darin, zu einem besseren Verstaendnis der Vielfalt der Esel beizutragen, um deren Erhaltung und genetische Verbesserung zu foerdern, und insbesondere: die morphologischen Merkmale zu bewerten; die Koerpermasse der Esel zu ermitteln; anhand der Koerpermasse Gleichungen zur Vorhersage des Lebendgewichts der Esel zu erstellen; die biometrischen Indizes der Esel anhand der Koerpermasse zu schaetzen und die genetische Variabilitaet zu analysieren sowie die genetische Struktur und die genetischen Beziehungen zwischen den Eselpopulationen zu ermitteln. Zu diesem Zweck wurde eine Stichprobe von 174 erwachsenen Eseln (96 Maennchen und 78 Weibchen) an 7 Orten und 3 Maerkten im Untersuchungsgebiet beobachtet. Die Ergebnisse zeigen, dass bei den Eseln des Hochlands im Nordwesten Kameruns eine grosse phaenotypische Variabilitaet besteht.
