Loin d'illustrer un simple fait divers, David compose une oeuvre de propagande et une pietà moderne, hissant son ami au rang de héros et de martyr. La présente publication lève un pan de voile sur la genèse et sur l'histoire de ce chef-d'oeuvre, recourant non seulement au contexte historique mais aussi à l'imagerie scientifique obtenues lors de récentes recherches inédites en laboratoire.
