B&W frontispiece depicting the New York Ins…titute for the Blind. Very good internally. These letters were written by a blind poetess from Rochester, NY who, after her husband's death, attended the New York Institute for the Blind in New York City. A number of letters describe her travels around New York State including a trip back to Rochester via the Hudson River and the Catskills.

First published in 1849, this is a…reprint from 1858.Sarah Helen DeKroyft (1818-1915), a native of the Rochester area of upstate New York; a school teacher who ws widowed on her wedding day and then suddenly became blind at the age of 27 years. She had an excellent education for a young woman of her time and turned to writing to support herself. This book is a collection of her letters, many of which were written during her one-year stay at the New York Institution for the Blind. They relate the thoughts and experiences of an educated young woman in her first three years of blindness.
