The book is in Very Good- condition and was issued without a dust jacket. The spine ends and corners of the magazine covers have smallish chips missing, along with several edge tears. The front cover has noticeable toning / foxing to the foredge. The text pages are clean, but there is noticeable heavy toning throughout. The paper is noticeably fragile The front endpaper has cracked at the spine hinge from the top down, most of the page. The covers are soiled and lightly creased with a short split along the head of the spine. 48 pages, plus a 4-page insert on newsprint satirizing the gruesome yellow journalism of the time. The magazine is profusely illustrated in black & white throughout, including many full-page illustrations. There is some damp staining to the edges of a few pages with a few darker stains. Good. A precursor to MAD Magazine, Ballyhoo was a humor & satire magazine launched in August 1931. Created by George T. Delacorte Jr. and edited by Norman Anthony, the satirical magazine was conceived during the Great Depression. Its humor mocked corporate and advertising culture with spoofs of advertisements and caricatures of politicians and public figures of the period including President Hoover and prohibition. The satirical insert is titled "The Evening Traffic" for October 20, 1931 with boxes on either side of the title proclaiming "Weather: Fine Night for a Murder" and "All the Stiffs that are Fit to Print" followed by illustrated satirical stories about murders. The magazine further satirizes cigar advertising, and a song to drive away the Great Depression, mocking President Hoover, Calvin Coolidge, Al Smith, Henry Ford and Mayor Walker.
