Paperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. Today, declares svengali-at-large Malcolm McLaren, there are two words that sum up the culture: authenticity' is one, and the other karaoke'! Many artists spend their entire life trying to authenticate, make true, a karaoke culturebut you have to be a magician to make that happen. This book, like the exhibition from which it stems, is built around McLaren's Shallow, a series of 21 musical paintings made from a grab bag of pop culture's debris over the past 50 years. The project, curated by Bernd Wurlitzer, brought together music-related works by Delia Brown, Wolfgang Flad, Rodney Graham, Gregor Hildebrandt, Damien Hirst, Alicja Kwade, Jim Lambie, Jack Pierson, Rob Pruitt, Michael Queenland, Anselm Reyle, Michael Sailstorfer and Andreas Schulze. McLaren has proven to be a visionary of pop culture and a pop cultural icon for more than 30 years; with Shallow, he formally announces his identity as an artist. Text by Delia Brown, Rodney Graham, Damien Hirst. Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.

Aggiungi al carrelloPaperback. Condizione: New. Sand, Planes and Submarines is an unlikely title for a book about the role two small towns far from the sea played in the First World War. Yet this extraordinary account tells how Leighton Buzzard and Linslade provided the means to shorten the war. Without the sand, the big guns could not have been made for the Front; the planes allowed the Royal Flying Corps to take on the superior German air force; and the submarine nets protected not only the British fleet but also the French, Italians, Americans and Russians. The two towns were changed dramatically by the war. They ceased to be the playground of the rich from London. The army requisitioned the hundreds of thoroughbred horses that had been used by the aristocracy to hunt with the Rothschilds. Among these larger themes there are many personal stories like that of the Linslade postman and his horse, Bluebell, who took part in the last great cavalry charge of the war.

Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good. Condizione sovraccoperta: No Dustjacket as Issued. First edition. An exhibition catalog. Inscribed "For Alex-Thanks for hanging out! Hope to see you again soon! Delia." Signed copies rarely offered. Text by Sarah Valdez 48 pages, hardcover 17 full-color plates 8-1/2 x 9-3/4 inches. Ms. Brown has received considerable press and attention for her work, which often speaks to privilege and power, the attendant supporting roles required to maintain the social-economic balance, and the spaces in between. She frequently uses the identifiable trappings of conspicuous consumption to comment on subtle class distinctions, values and mores of the modern world, often specifically as refers to the rarified climes of contemporary art. Ms. Brown further explores her ?Guerrilla Lounging? series with a body of work set in Aspen. The luxury-heavy mountain town proved a perfect setting for her lavishly rendered paintings of private parties in appropriated spaces. The setting and Ms. Brown?s attentions successfully produce a particularly luscious, if biting, paean of social criticism. Though her aesthetic is clearly tinted by the lingering golden light of her native Southern California, Ms. Brown currently lives and works in Brooklyn, NY. Signed by Author.
