Born in Illinois, she studied at Stanford and at the California School of Fine Arts in San Francisco and lived in the Yosemite Valley from 1928 until 1942 with her husband Herman Hoss - Federal Magistrate and Treasurer of Yosemite Park and Curry Company. Known for her love of the Sierras, she would create some of the most iconic and memorable images of Yosemite, including maps, paintings, and posters.…

I am pleased to offer here a First Edition version of: "The Trees of Yosemite- A Popular Account" by Mary Curry Tresidder, with 34 Linoleum Block Prints by Della Taylor Hoss. This medium sized book was published by the Stanford University Press of Stanford, California and dated 1932, the First Edition with the same date on title and copyright pages. This is a very rare book; I found one copy of the softcover version online and another of the hard cover, the latter signed by the Author and listing at over $400. Condition: This book is in very good condition. The printed paper dust jacket is a bit brittle and has some splits, along the upper gutter and at the top of the rear spine (I suspect that a competent book doctor could remedy these issues). The hard covers are lightly bumped, at the corners and spine tips. Inside, someone has erased something with a sharpie but that is the only mark I found in the book. The interior pages and plates are clean and bright, without toning or foxing. Both hinges are intact and the binding is tight and sound. This book is not ex-library or a remainder. First edition, thus, of this promotional brochure touting the attractions of visiting Yosemite National Park for vacation, as well as the advantages of riding in the Yosemite Transportation System (Y.T.S.) stage buses with open canopies "a proper impression of the grandeur." Hoss (1901-1997) seldom drew maps, and is best remembered for her book Trees of Yosemite, as well as illustrator for Ansel Hall's Location Map Mesa Verde National Park. She was married to Hermon Hoss, the attorney for the Yosemite Park & Curry Co., and also the sister of noted pictorial map creator, Ruth Taylor White (1902-1985).
