The aim of this volume is to compare, at a large scale, the strategies employed by the farmers to exploit obsidian in different socio-cultural and environmental settings and to identify the main parameters that conditioned the exploitation of this raw material. Moreover, the topic is investigated through multiple scales: from a large region to a single house level. This volume therefore brings new contributions, which are targeting the issues of obsidian provenance performed with XRF and Neutron Activation Analyses (NAA), and production and use through techno-typological and functional, use-wear analyses. Finally, subsistence strategies, socio-economic contexts and symbolism are largely discussed by addressing obsidian as a key element in chipped stone assemblages across a wide area, which once again proves to have had a significant role in understanding the onset of farming societies and their local and regional developments and transformations through time. German description: Dieser Band bietet eine Zusammenstellung von Beitragen, die innovative Ansatze in der Obsidianforschung verfolgen und Fragen zu Beschaffungsstrategien, Steinbearbeitung und Verwendung dieses Rohstoffs, der an einigen Fundorten die wichtigste externe Rohmaterialquelle darstellt, diskutieren. Der geochronologische Rahmen des Buches ist absichtlich weit gefasst und deckt einen Zeitraum vom 8. bis zum 1. Jh. v. Chr. sowie ein grosses Gebiet vom zentralen Mittelmeerraum bis zum Kaukasus ab, einschliesslich Primardaten zu Obsidian aus Fundstellen und geologischen Quellen in Georgien, Armenien, Anatolien, der Agais und Italien. Ziel dieses Bandes ist es, die von den fruhen Ackerbauern angewandten Strategien zur Gewinnung von Obsidian in verschiedenen soziokulturellen und okologischen Kontexten in grossem Massstab zu vergleichen und die wichtigsten Parameter zu ermitteln, die die Nutzung dieses Rohstoffs beeinflussten. Daruber hinaus wird das Thema auf mehreren Ebenen untersucht: von einer grossen Region bis hin zu einem einzelnen Haus.
