In this Songbook the author brings not just Bluegrass words and music, but a fascinating history of the art and the people who have been a part of it. Bill Monroe is usually credited with having created Bluegrass style in 1945. In 1971 there were well over a hundred Bluegrass festivals across the United States; this is approximately double the number held in 1970 and far more than those of previous years. Record sales, too, are advancing. Author Cyporyn says that of the one hundred songs in this book, sixty are originals that are many years old and in public domain, since they have never actually been published. Through the years they've been preserved in the minds of Bluegrass musicians and could be carried forward only by one musician learning from another. Many have been recorded, of course, but always in sound, not on paper. In one sense, it is probably what Bluegrass hasn't done over the years that makes it so popular today. It has evolved and grown, yes. But it has generally been played on nonamplified stringed instruments, and tends to use voices and instruments as an ensemble. Microphones are used, but the solo voice or instrument is closest to the mike, and the total balance of the group is achieved by the placement of players or singers around the mike. The result of all this is songs that sound much like those of the old days with their simple harmonies and traditional vocal styles., Bluegrass music smacks of the pioneers, of covered wagons, of Appalachian Mountain heritage, and the winning of the West.
