Seattle was founded in 1851 when the Denny party landed at Alki Point in November of that year. Memb…ers of the party had scouted the area before and the rest of the 13 men, women and children arrived in November. The party traveled from Illinois via Portland OR and was headed by Arthur A. Denny (1822-1899) who became the leading citizen of the community as it grew over the next few decades. Issued in 1888, this small privately-printed memoir describes the early days of Seattle -- and is the first actual book discussing and describing the history of the city. This copy is inscribed on the front endpaper by Denny to "Dr. James T. White compliments of A. A. Denny". A faint pencil note below in another hand (possibly White's?) notes: "Seattle, Wash. June 29 "98." The date indicates that Denny likely inscribed it just a few days after his 76th birthday and less than three months before he died. Dr. White was an accomplished person who sailed on several explorations to the waters of Alaska and the Arctic. The book was apparently printed in an edition of 300 copes, for Denny to give to friends and associates. It is somewhat uncommon, especially signed. This is an exceptionally nice copy, housed in a very fine clamshell case of brown cloth with gilt-stamped Morocco spine. Signed by Author(s).

Classic, and somewhat uncommon story of the founding of Seattle by Arthur Denny who led the party who stepped ashore at Alkali Point in November 1851. The book is Denny's telling of his first ten years in Seattle. Printed by Clarence Bagley an early Seattle newspaperman. Supposedly 300 copies were printed with many destroyed in the Seattle fire of 1889 which burned Bagley's printshop. Re-printed several times. George Tweney, in "The Washington 89" calls "Pioneer Days in Seattle" one of the rarest of early Washington Territorial imprints. Washington 89: 12, Graff 1053, Howes D253a.

Sinclair, nee, Mary Low, who, as a child of John Low, joined the Denny Party near American Falls in present-day Idaho, and eventually sailed from Portland to Seattle on the schooner Exact. Mary Low Sinclair eventually settled in the city of Snohomish, and was indeed the first white woman to settle in Snohomish County. Laid in is a postcard, ca. 1910, mounted on cardstock, showing the original Denny cabin at Alki. On the verso is written, "A souvenir of one of the earliest homes on Puget Sound. Built by A. A. Denny in the spring of 1852 at Alki Point, and a duplicate of a cabin built by John N. Low, a few months earlier. Presented to Mrs. K. K. Keeler by Mary L. Sinclair, One of the Original Pioneers." Two short newspaper clippings, 1922, are tipped in to the front pastedown. The energetic pioneer's priceless recollections of his arrival on Puget Sound and the founding and early development of Seattle. Includes a good account of the Indian attack on the village of Seattle, 1855.Apocrypha suggests the 1888 first edition of his work had been almost completely consumed by the Great Seattle Fire. The first-hand account of the founding of Seattle by the leader of The Denny Party, which left Illinois in the Spring of 1851 and arrived in the Puget Sound area several months later. The book describes in detail their journey, the claiming of land on Alki Point, securing supplies, the early saw mills, and much more. Only a small number of this volume were privately printed by Denny's friend and newspaperman, Clarence Bagley. As noted by Howes, "many copies [were] burned," presumably in the Seattle fire of 1889. Denny writes about the early days of Seattle as he remembers cabins and sawmills, steamboats on the Sound, Indians, soldiers and settlers. Denny was the leading founder of the town of Seattle. In 1851 he left Illinois an…d migrated westward with his family and acquaintances, intending to settle in the Willamette Valley. Hearing about the area around Puget Sound, the Denny Party sailed from Portland, landed at Alki Point in November 1851, and four months later staked claim to land along the eastern shore of Elliott Bay, in what would become the city of Seattle. A surveyor by trade, Denny helped lay out the real estate that formed a large part of the pioneer economy. He served as postmaster, merchant, banker, and legislator. Over the course of his life, Denny witnessed or participated in most of the key events in early Seattle history to include the founding in 1851-52, the Indians? attack on Seattle in 1856, the creation and siting of the University of Washington in the early 1860s, the courtship of railroad companies during the 1870s, and the labor unrest and anti-Chinese movement of the 1880s. In 1843 Denny married Mary Ann Boren, and together they had six children. Mary Ann Denny neatly wrote on the rear free endpaper, ?Mrs. Dullie Miller from Mrs. Mary A. Denny, June 11, 1905." A fine copy.
