Red and black spine labels with gilt lettering and trim. Chipping to head and tail of spine. Gutters starting. Ex-library stamps and markings from the New Hampshire state library. Interior pages are clean, unmarked and in great condition. This volume covers compiled, general, local and session laws, as well as, codes and statutes regarding Arizona, California, Colorado, Dakota, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon, Utah, Washington and Wyoming. These regulations were being reviewed and published in the year 1885. The same year, the Rock Springs massacre occurred in the Wyoming territory. It was a result of a riot between Chinese immigrant miners and white immigrant miners. In addition to growing racial tensions, white miners were angered by the ongoing labor dispute over the Union Pacific Coal Department's policy of paying Chinese miners lower wages than white miners. This policy caused the Chinese to be hired over the white miner. When the rioting ended, at least 28 Chinese miners were dead and 15 were injured. Rioters burned 75 Chinese homes. This is an oversized or heavy book that requires additional postage for international delivery outside of Canada and the US.

Hardcover. Condizione: Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. Rare and scarce, historically significant document. READ FULL DESCRIPTION! This is a first edition ex-library bound copy of the 1890 census, printed in 1894. It has dozens of plates and maps which are not included in the pagination, and most are in very good condition with some preserved tissue guards. There are many small edge tears that have been repaired with tape; there are a few larger closed tears also repaired. Only one torn page with a large missing piece was observed (between pages 242-243, an Indian territory map, see last photo). It is not the complete census as only the Southwestern and some Western states were meant to be included, though it does include many other states as they have short entries on adjacent pages. Here is what is included: Arizona, pages 133-198 [so missing pages 1-132]. Arkansas and California, pages 199-223. Colorado, pages 224-230. Connecticut, Delaware, DC, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, pages 231-241. Illinois, Indiana, Indian Territory, pages 242-317. Iowa, pages 318-320. [Missing pages 321-380 states alpha between IA & NV]. Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico, pages 381-446. [Missing pages 447-526]. Ohio, Oklahoma, pages 527-558. [Missing pages 559-end]. Book is in good+ condition with solid binding. There are cross outs on front end paper and spine, and although there are many tape repairs, most are on edges, and majority of pages are clean. A couple of check marks were observed but no other writing. The first page appears to be typewritten (on a typewriter). Light page toning. See photos which are part of the description.

Prima edizione
First Edition. Thick 4to. Original cloth, vi [2], 683 pp., nearly 200 plates, 25 maps. A rare and important report. All aspects of the conditions of the American Indians in 1890 are reported here. The lengthy introduction provides charts and tables summarizing Indian populations in 1822, 1832, 1850, 1853, 1860, 1867, 1870, 1880, and 1890. The introduction is followed by a historic review, an overview of policy and administration of Indian affairs. The next section is comprised of a review of the 1890 Indian population, Indian schools, Indian lands and reservations, including much additional statistical information. The majority of the volume (pages 129-634) is comprised of a report of "Condition of Indians Taxed and Indians Not Taxed" for each state or territory individually. These are detailed reports addressing each tribe within each state or territory. This splendid volume contains 11 striking, chromolithographic plates by Julian Scott (1st Congressional Medal of Honor Recipient); two 2-1/2 page colored fold-out plates by Walter Shirlaw; and 6 colored plates by Peter Moran and Gilbert Gaul. The 3 important, large, folding, colored, maps are in exceptionally fine condition: "Map Showing Indian Reservations Within the Limits of the United States" (33"x21"), "Map of the Linguistic Stocks of the American Indians" (20"x17") by J.W. Powell, and the map of "Indian Territory and Oklahoma" (29"x22"). "This is an exhaustive census of the Native American population of the United States at the close of the frontier. As American Indians had not been treated in detail in previous censuses, it was decided under the administration of Superintendent Robert Porter to prepare this mammoth undertaking as part of the 1890 census. Included are discussions of Indian populations by state, status reports concerning life on the reservations, disbursement of populations on and off reservations, progress in schooling and employment, and a wealth of other data. The highly prized chromolithograph plates have long drawn collectors to this work."--Bill Reese, The Best Of The West 214. An attractive very good internally clean tight copy, with spine lettering a bit dull. Rarely seen. especially complete with all maps and plates in fine bright condition, including tissues.
