Abstract: The zero-mass representations of the inhomogeneous Lorentz group are considered as contractions of the representations for real and imaginary masses. It is shown that all zero-mass representations may be obtained from contracting either real mass or imaginary mass representations, but that it is more reasonable to associate the representations describing zero-mass particles with infinite angular momentum with contractions of the imaginary mass representations. / Robinson was a British physicist who spent most of his career at the Australian National University. He was former president of the Australian Mathematical Society. "Although Irish background, Derek grew up in Southern England. He was working in Switzerland, Germany, France and the USA. Derek spent ten years in Marseille as Professor of Theoretical Physics before moving to Australia. He was Professor of Mathematics at the University of New South Wales from 1978-1982. Since then he has been at the Institute of Advance Studies at the Australian National University . In systematically developing the analytic and algebraic background on Lie groups with polynomial growth, it is possible to describe the large time behavior for the semigroup generated by a complex second-order operator with the aid of homogenization theory and to present an asymptotic expansion. Further, the text goes beyond the classical homogenization theory by converting an analytical problem into an algebraic one.This work is aimed at graduate students as well as researchers in the above areas.
