Hardcover. Condizione: Near Fine. Condizione sovraccoperta: Near Fine. 1st Edition. The fourth volume in Carlos Castaneda's influential series chronicling his apprenticeship with the Yaqui shaman Don Juan Matus. In this work Castaneda expands the narrative beyond Don Juan himself, focusing on the circle of female apprentices and… sorcerers who inhabit the same mystical tradition. The book explores themes of perception, transformation, and the tension between rational consciousness and alternate modes of awareness - ideas that helped make Castaneda one of the most widely read and controversial figures in 1970s spiritual and anthropological literature. His books became international bestsellers and played a major role in introducing shamanistic and altered-consciousness themes to a broad Western readership. Published by Hodder and Stoughton in 1978, this is the true first British edition, printed in Great Britain and reproduced from the original Simon & Schuster setting. Original maroon cloth boards with gilt spine lettering. The dust jacket features artwork and design by Robert Giusti and retains the publisher's ISBN on the front flap. Condition: Near Fine / Near Fine. Book shows clean maroon cloth boards with bright gilt lettering and sharp corners; binding tight and square. Interior pages clean and bright with a neat ex-libris name ('Doug Berthelot - February '78') written on the title page, otherwise free of markings. Dust jacket likewise Near Fine, clean and vibrant with only minor edgewear at extremities; price-clipped. The jacket may appear slightly creased in photographs due to curvature when laid flat but shows no actual structural creasing. Very small, closed tear at upper right front of jacket. The copyright page states 'First printed in Great Britain 1978.' No later printing statements are present, consistent with the first U.K. edition / first printing issued by Hodder & Stoughton, produced from the American typesetting used by Simon & Schuster. Carlos Castaneda (1925-1998) was a Peruvian-born American anthropologist and writer whose books describing his apprenticeship with the Yaqui shaman Don Juan Matus became international publishing phenomena. Beginning with The Teachings of Don Juan (1968), his works blended anthropology, mysticism, and narrative experimentation, selling millions of copies worldwide and influencing the counterculture's interest in shamanism and altered states of consciousness. Jacket Painting and Design by Robert Giusti (illustratore).
