The choices of items to be included were similarly based on the desire to produce a volume that might be read by a broader audience than the specialists who will mine the larger collection for research purposes. The editors began, as they explain, with the assumption that these volumes are a form of literature rather than simply a compendium of historical documents. The volume does read, as they had hoped, more like a good monograph than a piece of an archival project. .
