Uit het gebouw zelf, en uit de geschiedenis van de heerlijkheid Eine, valt af te leiden dat de Sint-Eligiuskerk in de 11de eeuw gesticht werd en al vroeg de status van kapittelkerk kreeg. Uit de akten van het kapittel weet de auteur een boeiend relaas af te leiden over de uitbreidingen, verbouwingen en stoffering van het gebouw.
