Prima edizione
Hardback. Condizione: Fine. Condizione sovraccoperta: Very Good. William L. Jacobs, Peter Newell, Ethel Pennewill Brown and Wilson C. Dexter (illustratore). First Edition. Stuart, Ruth McEnery. The Haunted Photograph, Whence and Whither, A Case in Diplomacy, The Afterglow. New York: The Century Co., 1911. First edition. Octavo, pp. [1-8] [1-2] 3-170. Original tan pictorial cloth, front and spine panels stamped in gold, white and black, fore- and bottom edges untrimmed. Illustrated by William L. Jacobs, Peter Newell, Ethel Pennewill Brown and Wilson C. Dexter on ten inserted plates. A fine copy in very good dust jacket with a shallow chip at head of spine, nicking off the word "The." Scarce in jacket. #3554. $125. The second and third stories concern African-Americans. The first is an ambiguously supernatural tale about a photo of a hotel that burned, killing the heroine's late husband; the photo may or may not show him carrying on with another woman. The story bears some affinity to M. R. James's "The Mezzotint" (1904). Whether or not this is a case of a magical object -- or a deranged observer -- the story would seem to fall into the general category of the fantastic. Bleiler (1948), p. 261. Smith, American Fiction, 1900-1925 S-1092.
