With the advent of Space and Nuclear Sciences, this branch of Technology is assuming special significance. Even for a developing nation like India, the need for sustained research and studies in Powder Metallurgy cannot be overlooked. Realising such a need, the Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur, organised an International symposium on "Powder Metallurgy and Material Strengthening" in February 1969. Many eminent scientists from India and abroad graced the occasion with their presence and actively participated in the deliberations of the symposium. The symposium, acted as a common platform for free and valuable exchange of ideas concerning research and development in this modern branch of Metallurgy. It was felt that such a valuable discourse should be presented in printed form, for the benefit of educational, research and industrial organisations who are actively engaged in the pursuit of this branch of Technology.
