Soft cover. Condizione: New. Before the relentless March of history, The lone individual is helpless. Yet it is men whose collective efforts give history its momentum and ushers in change of eras. These changes are tempestuous at timeslike a churning that brings up both nectar and scum. Elegy for the East explores the utter helplessness and travails of man in face of exactly such overwhelming odds. A narrative not far from truth, where an uncaring, anonymous, and overbearing state creates and/or co-creates situations of social and political strife, and where innocent and beautiful dreams of the masses die in the stony bed of terror and counter-terror. The sylvian countryside of Assam with its Green paddy fields hide memories of bloodshed, death, rape, and terror. And through all these, the eternal narrative of man's quest for peace and meaning shine like a beacon. This novel is a work of fiction; The characters bear no resemblance to any person dead or alive. Yet they walked amongst us allin flesh and blood, in thoughts and dreams. Fiction that reflects reality in a more truthful way. A masterly work of a master storyteller.…

Soft cover. Condizione: New. A father refuses to talk to his daughter for marrying a card-carrying communist against his wishes, but when his children send him dishes prepared in their kitchens, he will eschew the food prepared by all but the estranged daughter. A grandfather asks his grandson to find him some bogus letterheads belonging to an underground organization, for in a state where extortion falls in the realm of the quotidian, anybody can be an extortionist. A family refuses to acknowledge the real reason for the death of their son from a dreaded disease, fearing social ostracism and wishing to avoid shame. Two old men share dirty jokes and dirty films in a world that disallows pleasures for the elderly. Kahini is a heartening slice-of-life tale about lives lived and experienced in Assam. Using the trope of four men who share an unusual friendship that goes beyond their apparent differences, Sahitya Akademi Award winner Dhrubajyoti Borah chronicles a state that remains robust, bustling and full of life, even as it seems to sit on a powder keg.…

Hardcover. Condizione: New. Sriman is a young man living in insurgency-hit Assam whose life turns upside down when he happens to be at the wrong place at the wrong time. The raw terror which fills Sriman after witnessing the incident leaves him paranoid. Existing as a terrified zombie, unable to share his secret with anyone, Sriman drifts through the murky world of journalism into the world of the dadasthe erstwhile underground leaders who surrendered to the state and then started working for it. And it is at such a time that he again faces a terrifying encounter that unhinges him. In the Himalayas, Sriman learns to look at the world and himself in a new way, discovers the teachings of Tathagata Buddha and gains an insight into the tragedy of the Tibetan refugees and their improbable dream of restoration of their homeland someday. And it is here that he also discovers love in all its splendour and sorrow, with its promise of redemption of his sheltered and fragmented life. Amidst the decay that has set in the society and the ruins of his personal life, Sriman's search for new meaning and hope in this life becomes a universal quest that tugs at one's heartstrings. Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. Neuware - 'I have become like a zombie, like a sleepwalker. And everything appears to be like a bad dreamnothing but a sleepwalker's dream'June, along with Ron and several other insurgents, is fleeing their hideout in Bhutan after an army attack. With them is their injured, unconscious leader who is unlikely to survive the ordeal of their journey towards the Assam border. They carry him on a stretcher over the treacherous terrain of the Himalayan foothills, the ominous and brooding presence of the mountains a constant reminder of their own defencelessness. With winter upon them they desperately need to find a temporary shelter. Miraculously, their leader emerges from his coma and is able to guide them to a cave where he had earlier created a 'safe house' with supplies of food and other essentials. For June, a young woman trapped by events beyond her control into becoming an insurgent in troubled Assam, the journey is a test of her endurance and dedication. As the only woman in the group she sometimes feels alienated but is determined to make the best of a situation that is extremely tough for all of them. She does sentry duty like all the others and keeps herself in good physical shape. But her memories keep taking her back to her long-lost family, her village, her innocent childhood and the tragic circumstances under which she had become an insurgent. Ron, too, is flooded by his own memories of his boyhood and the turbulent early days of passionate commitment and high adventure. With a deep understanding of human psychology and keen attention to detail, Dhrubajyoti Borah traces the journey of Ron, June and the other insurgents towards an elusive freedom and an uncertain future.…
