Higgins coined the word intermedia to describe his artistic activities, defining it in a 1965 essay by the same name, published in the first number of the Something Else Newsletter. His most notable audio contributions include Danger Music scores and the Intermedia concept to describe the ineffable inter-disciplinary activities that became prevalent in the 1960s Higgins founded Unpublished Editions (later renamed Printed Editions). The poet and renaissance man Dick Higgins addresses his letter to "Dear Jerry", his friend and fellow poet Jerome Rothenberg "YIKES! -- I've just finished playing Mahler's EIGHT SYMPHONY (the Kubelik performance) -- which includes the ending of Goethe's FAUST II -- it leaves my head swimming every time. I'm teaching it at Milwaukee -- I think of it as the Romantic cluster in my courses." He goes on musing "Anyway -- a thought. Why not us do an incomplete anthology of innovative (in the sense of un-traditional for cognitive westerners - though they might belong to other traditions) poetry since ca. 1970? 1/3 English language, 1/3 others. and 1/3 metapoetries and ethnopoetries that fit in in some living sense?" "I'd love to work with you on something sometime." He goes on to respond to a question Rothenberg had posed a few years back as to where there were any Turkish epics. "But immediately one should realize -- though the Turkic and Mongol peoples were tribal, they haven't been illiterate since the 7th century BC. Thus their oral literature -- which is very very rich -- is their folk literature. And works like the Koke Sudur (a 12th century novel), which has never been translated at all adequately, read (so far as I can tell) rather like corresponding Japanese and Chinese works of the time." He muses about translating some of the Mongol literature. Signed "Dick" in ink by Dick Higgins. There is substantial offsetting to the top of the pages and as the letter was folded vertically, a tear along the top of the fold on the second page. Good. The American artist, composer, theorist, poet, printmaker and co-founder of the Fluxus movement Dick Higgins (1938-1998) was also a linguist fascinated with the sound and meaning of language. Higgins was inspired by John Cage and was a pioneer of electronic correspondence. He described his work as intermedia, defining it in print in the first issue of his "Something Else Newsletter".
