ardcover. Condizione: Very good. Condizione sovraccoperta: Very good. Presumed First Edition, First printing. xiii, [1], 465, [1] pages. Illustrations (some in color). About the Authors. Acronyms and Abbreviations. NASA History Series. Index. Proceedings of October 2007 conference, sponsored by the NASA History Division and the National Air and Space Museum, to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Sputnik 1 launch in October 1957 and the dawn of the space age. Among the authors are: Roger D. Launius, John M. Logsdon, and Hans Mark. Steven J. Dick (born October 24, 1949, Evansville, Indiana) is an American astronomer, author, and historian of science most noted for his work in the field of astrobiology. Dick served as the Chief Historian for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration from 2003 to 2009 and as the Baruch S. Blumberg NASA/Library of Congress Chair in Astrobiology from 2013 to 2014. Before that, he was an astronomer and historian of science at the United States Naval Observatory in Washington, DC, from 1979 to 2003. Fifty years ago, with the launch of Sputnik I on October 4, 1957 and the flurry of activity that followed, events were building toward what some historians now recognize as a watershed in historyâ"the beginning of the Space Age. There is no doubt that the last 50 years have witnessed numerous accomplishments in what has often been termed "the new ocean" of space, harking back to a long tradition of exploration. Earth is now circled by thousands of satellites, looking both upward into space at distant galaxies and downward toward Earth for reconnaissance, weather, communications, navigation, and remote sensing. Robotic space probes have explored most of the solar system, returning astonishing images of alien worlds. Space telescopes have probed the depths of the universe at many wavelengths. In the dramatic arena of human spaceflight, 12 men have walked on the surface of the Moon, the Space Shuttle has had 119 flights, and the International Space Station (ISS), a cooperative effort of 16 nations, is almost "core complete." In addition to Russia, which put the first human into space in April 1961, China has now joined the human spaceflight club with two Shenzhou flights, and Europe is contemplating its entry into the field. After 50 years of robotic and human spaceflight, and as serious plans are being implemented to return humans to the Moon and continue on to Mars, it is a good time to step back and ask questions that those in the heat of battle have had but little time to ask. What has the Space Age meant? What if the Space Age had never occurred? Has it been, and is it still, important for a creative society to explore space? How do we, and how should we, remember the Space Age? It is with such questions in mind that the NASA History Division and the National Air and Space Museum Space History Division convened a conference on October 22-23, 2007, to contemplate some of the large questions associated with space exploration over the last half century. The conference encompassed two main themes, reflected in the first two sections of this book. The first, "national and global dimensions of the Space Age," was meant to examine the place of space exploration in human history. The second theme, "remembrance and cultural representation of the Space Age," posed questions about how the historical record of the Space Age has been collected, preserved, displayed, and interpreted around the world, especially in the United States, Russia, the European Union, Canada, and China.

DJ has minor edgewear and soiling, with a noticable edge tear at the bottom front near the spine. Before that, he was an astronomer and historian of science at the United States Naval Observatory in Washington, DC, from 1979 to 2003. Among the contributors is Roger D. Launius. This volume presents a series of in-depth studies on the mutual interaction of space exploration and societyâ"part of a larger need to understand the relationships between science, technology, and society. After beginning with a study of public attitudes toward space over time, it then moves on to specific case studies of potential "spinoffs" from NASA's space program in the areas of medical technology, integrated circuits, and the multibillion-dollar industry today known as MEMS (microelectromechanical systems). These studies explicitly raise the difficult questions of what can be considered spinoff and how much of any particular claimed spinoff can be attributed to NASA. Beyond spinoffs, the final part of the volume considers broader issues of space and society, including the controversy over the use of nuclear components in spacecraft, the relationship between NASA and the environment, the impact of applications satellites, and the impact of the Apollo program. Space exploration has also spawned entirely new disciplines, including astrogeology, astrochemistry, and even astrotheology. The final chapter explores the budding discipline of astrosociology.

Before that, he was an astronomer and historian of science at the United States Naval Observatory in Washington, DC, from 1979 to 2003. In 2003, he was named the Chief Historian for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). During his years at NASA, Dick wrote on the importance of exploration to society, commissioned numerous histories of spaceflight, and edited several volumes on the societal impact of space flight and on the occasion of the 50th anniversaries of NASA and the space age. Keith Cowing is an astrobiologist, an American former NASA employee and the editor of the American space program blog NASA Watch. He is a credentialed NASA journalist and is known to be a critic of NASA activities and policies. Cowing is a strong supporter of human spaceflight. For several years, NASA refused to accredit Cowing as a journalist and denied him access to NASA media events. Cowing was eventually granted full press accreditation. Cowing obtained exclusive first-hand information about the genesis of the Vision for Space Exploration, detailed in New Moon Rising. The NASA History Division is pleased to present the record of a unique meeting on risk and exploration held under the auspices of the NASA Administrator, Sean O'Keefe, at the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, California, from September 26-29, 2004. The meeting was the brainchild of Keith Cowing and astronaut John Grunsfeld, NASA's chief scientist at the time. Its goals, stated in the letter of invitation published herein, were precipitated by the ongoing dialogue on risk and exploration in the wake of the Columbia Shuttle accident, the Hubble Space Telescope servicing question, and, in a broader sense, by the many NASA programs that inevitably involve a balance between risk and forward-looking exploration. The meeting, extraordinarily broad in scope and participant experience, offers insights on why we explore, how to balance risk and exploration, how different groups define and perceive risk differently, and the importance of exploration to a creative society. At NASA Headquarters, Bob Jacobs, Trish Pengra, and Joanna Adamus of NASA Public Affairs led the meeting's implementation. At NASA's Ames Research Center, Director Scott Hubbard coordinated a group including Rho Christensen, Danny Thompson, Shirley Berthold, Victoria Steiner, Ed Schilling, Mike Mewhinney, Kathleen Burton, and the Ames Video Team. Mel Averner also contributed signicantly to the concept and content.

Hardcover. Condizione: Very good. Condizione sovraccoperta: Good. Presumed First Edition, First printing. xi, [1], 659, [1] pages. Frontis is a color illustrations. Footnotes. Illustrations. Afterword by Martin Collins. About the Authors. Acronyms and Abbreviations. The NASA History Series. Index. DJ has some soiling and spotting on back. Minor rippling at bottom of several back pages. Steven J. Dick was the Chief Historian for NASA. He worked as an astronomer and historian of science at the U.S. Naval Observatory for about a quarter century before joining NASA. He received the Navy Meritorious Civilian Service Medal and a NASA Group Achievement Award. Roger D. Launius was the Chair of the Division of Space History at the Smithsonian Institution's National Air and Space Museum. Prior to that he served as NASA's Chief Historian. At the time of this publication, he had written or edited more than 20 books on aerospace history. At a May 1981 "Proseminar in Space History'' held at the Smithsonian Institution's National Air and Space Museum, historians came together to consider the state of the discipline of space history. It may be interpreted as marking the rise of space history as a recognizable subdiscipline within the field of U.S. history. Bringing together a diverse collection of scholars to review the state of the art in space history, this proseminar helped in a fundamental manner to define the field and to chart a course for future research. Its participants set about the task of charting a course for collecting, preserving, and disseminating the history of space exploration within a larger context of space policy and technology. In large measure, the course charted by the participants in this 1981 proseminar aided in advancing a very successful agenda of historical research, writing, and understanding of space history. The opportunities for both the exploration of space and for recording its history have been significant.
